Here is some background on Guatemala (that you may not have heard in the news). Until 1996, Guatemala was in the midst of a terrible civil war, and the area known as "Chichi" was brutally affected. Manos de Jesus settled in Chichi in 2003 to assist the more than 70,000 women left widowed. Many men who survived generally suffer acute alcoholism-- on top of extreme poverty. Families live on a dollar a day.
